Human Blood Group

A blood group classified according to presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs). This antigenic substance includes proteins, carbohydrates, glycoprotein, and glycolipids as per blood groups system.

An antigen presents on the cells and tissue, blood group his inherited and represents contribution of both parents.

There are two main types of blood system, ABO blood group system and Rh blood group system.
The ABO blood group system is the most important in human blood transfusion. This system can categorize as antibodies such as Anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies.

The Rh(Rhesus Factor) blood group system consist of almost 30 types antigens on red blood cells.Rh system is based on the presence and absence of the Rhesus-D antigen.

ABO blood group system can classify in four blood groups:
Blood Groups 'A': RBC's consist of A-antigen and generate Anti-B antibodies.
Blood Group 'B': RBC’s consisted of B-antigen and generates Anti-A antibodies.
Blood Group 'AB':  RBC’s consisted of both, A-antigen and B-antigen and generates neither Anti-A nor Anti-B antibodies.
Blood Group 'O':  RBC’s consisted of neither A-antigen nor B-antigen and generates both Anti-A and Anti-B antibodies.

Rhesus D antigen categories as Rhesus D positive (Rh+) or Rhesus negative (Rh-). So blood group can classify in eight blood groups. (ARh+, ARh-, BRh+, BRh-, ABRh+, ABRh-, ORh+, ORh-).
